USPS shipping zone

Zone 5

At 800 miles, this falls in USPS's 601-1000 mile band.

Zone determines how much distance-based carriers (USPS, and UPS/FedEx Ground) charge for the same weight: a higher zone costs more. Confirm the exact zone for a specific ZIP pair with USPS's own Domestic Zone Chart tool (postcalc.usps.com/DomesticZoneChart) before you build it into pricing.

How USPS assigns a zone

USPS domestic rates are priced by weight and zone. The zone is a distance band between the origin ZIP code and the first 3 digits of the destination ZIP code: the farther the package travels, the higher the zone and the more it costs to ship, for the same weight.

USPS assigns the exact zone to each specific ZIP-to-ZIP pairing in its official Domestic Zone Chart, not a pure straight-line distance. This calculator applies the published mileage bands, so treat the result as a close estimate and confirm an exact pairing with USPS's own tool if it matters for pricing.

Using zones on your store

  • Flat shipping rates. If you charge one flat rate nationwide, check what zone your farthest regular customers fall in: that's the rate that should set your price, not the average.
  • Table rate shipping. Both Shopify's built-in shipping and WooCommerce's zone-based shipping let you set different rates by region. USPS zones are a reasonable starting point for the bands.
  • Delivery time expectations. Higher zones usually mean longer transit times as well as higher cost. Pair this with the delivery date calculator when you set an "arrives by" promise.

Questions people ask

What is a USPS shipping zone?

A distance band between where a package ships from and where it's delivered. USPS has zones Local and 1 through 9, and rates go up with the zone for the same weight.

How do I find my exact USPS zone?

Use USPS's own Domestic Zone Chart tool with your origin ZIP code and the destination ZIP code. This calculator gives a close estimate from the distance.

Is Zone 9 the farthest zone?

Zone 9 isn't distance-based: it covers Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories and military (APO/FPO/DPO) addresses, and is priced on its own scale, separate from the mileage zones.

Do UPS and FedEx use the same zones as USPS?

They use their own zone charts, based on similar distance bands from their own origin facilities, but the exact numbering and mile ranges differ from USPS's chart.
