Revenue lost to abandoned carts

$40,800

680 of 1,000 checkouts didn't finish (68%). Recovery flows could win back $4,390 of that.

Abandonment rate varies enormously by device, traffic source and whether shipping cost is shown before checkout. Use your own store's rate, not an outside average, and check your email/SMS platform's own recovery reports rather than assuming the recovery rates above.

Lost revenue, then recovered revenue

Abandonment rate on its own is just a number. This calculator turns it into a dollar figure, then applies your email and SMS recovery flows on top, so you can see how much of that revenue is actually gone for good versus recoverable with the flows you already have running.

Abandoned = checkouts started − orders completed Lost revenue = abandoned × order value Recovered = abandoned × email recovery rate, then the remainder × SMS recovery rate

Example: the default numbers

Checkouts started vs completed
1,000 vs 320 (68% abandoned)
Revenue lost
680 × $60 = $40,800
Recovered by email (8%) then SMS (3% of the rest)
54.4 + 18.8 = 73.2 orders

Recoverable with email and SMS flows: $4,390. Still lost after both: $36,410.

Improving the numbers

  • Use your own recovery rates. Check your ESP and SMS platform's flow reports for the real figures rather than the examples shown here.
  • Show shipping cost early. Surprise shipping costs at the final step are one of the most common reasons carts get abandoned.
  • Layer flows. Email first, then SMS to the customers who didn't convert from email, tends to recover more than either channel alone.

Questions people ask

What's a normal cart abandonment rate?

It varies enormously by device, traffic source and whether shipping cost is shown before checkout. Use your own store's rate as the baseline to improve on, rather than an outside average.

How much revenue can abandoned cart emails actually recover?

It depends on your flow's timing, offer and audience. Check your ESP's own reporting for your real recovery rate rather than assuming a fixed figure.

Should I offer a discount in recovery emails?

Test it. A discount can lift recovery rate but also trains customers to abandon carts on purpose. Try a reminder-only email first, with a discount only in a later message.

Does mobile checkout affect abandonment?

Often significantly: a slow or fiddly mobile checkout tends to show a higher abandonment rate than desktop. Check your rate split by device if your analytics allow it.
