B2C vs. B2B reverse charge
Selling to a consumer (B2C), you generally charge VAT at the customer's country rate once you're registered there or over the EU-wide €10,000 threshold. Selling to a VAT-registered business (B2B) in another EU country, you generally charge no VAT: the buyer self-assesses it under the reverse charge, and you mark the invoice accordingly.
- Always confirm the VAT number on the EU's VIES system before treating a sale as B2B. An invalid number usually means charging VAT as if it were a B2C sale.
- This calculator only covers the standard rate. Many countries have reduced rates for specific goods (food, books, children's items), which aren't included.

Questions people ask
What's the standard VAT rate in the EU?
It varies by country, from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary. EU rules require every member state's standard rate to be at least 15%.
What is the reverse charge?
A mechanism for B2B sales between EU countries where the seller charges no VAT, and the buyer accounts for it themselves on their own VAT return instead.
Do I charge VAT at my country's rate or the customer's?
For B2C sales, generally the customer's country rate, once you're registered there or over the EU-wide €10,000 distance-selling threshold. Below that threshold, you can usually still charge your own country's rate.
Does this cover reduced VAT rates?
No, only each country's standard rate. Use the Irish or UK VAT calculators for their specific reduced-rate categories.
