Questions people ask
What is the standard VAT rate in Ireland?
23%, which applies to most goods and services that don't qualify for a reduced or zero rate.
What VAT rate applies to food in Ireland?
Most staple food is zero-rated. Restaurant and catering services moved to the 9% second reduced rate from 1 Jul 2026, alongside hairdressing.
What's the 4.8% rate for?
A specific rate for livestock, greyhounds and the hire of horses, distinct from the general reduced rates.
Is zero-rated the same as VAT-exempt?
No. Zero-rated goods are still technically within the VAT system at a 0% rate, which usually lets the seller reclaim VAT on related costs. Exempt goods sit outside the system entirely, which usually doesn't.
