Questions people ask
How do you calculate VAT backwards from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the VAT rate (as a decimal). A £120 total at 20% VAT gives £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net.
Is this different from the UK or Irish VAT calculators?
Same math, but this one takes any rate, so it works for any country or for a reduced/zero rate the dedicated calculators don't cover.
Why not just take 20% off the total?
Because 20% VAT was added to the net price, not the total. Taking 20% off the total overstates the VAT and understates the net price; dividing by 1.20 is the correct reverse.
Does this work for UK VAT margin scheme sales?
No, use the VAT margin scheme calculator for that: VAT there is worked out on the profit margin, not the full sale price.
