Charging VAT on Shopify
Go to Settings → Taxes and duties, open United Kingdom under Regional settings, and click Collect VAT with your VAT registration number. Shopify then applies the right rate automatically based on the product's tax status.
- Zero-rated vs. exempt. Zero-rated goods are still within the VAT system at 0%; exempt goods sit outside it. The distinction matters for what you can reclaim, even though neither adds VAT to the price.
- Removing VAT from a total? Switch the price type to "Gross" to pull VAT back out of a receipt or a VAT-included total.
Questions people ask
What is the standard rate of VAT in the UK?
20%, in effect since 4 January 2011.
What is reduced-rate VAT?
A 5% rate that applies to specific goods and services, such as children's car seats and home energy, rather than the standard 20%.
Is zero-rated VAT the same as no VAT?
The price effect is the same (no VAT is added), but zero-rated goods are still within the VAT system, which affects what a VAT-registered seller can reclaim.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Switch the price type to 'Gross (VAT included)' and enter the total: the calculator divides it back out to find the net price and VAT amount.
