Stripe's US card rates

Stripe's headline US rate is 2.9% + $0.30 for an online card charge. A card typed in manually, such as a phone order, costs more (3.4% + $0.30) because there's no chip or tap to prove the card was present.

Fee = sale amount × rate + $0.30

Example: the default numbers ($50 online card)

Sale amount
$50.00
Stripe fee
50 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.75

The fee is $1.75 (3.5% of the sale), so you're paid out $48.25.

International cards add 1.5%, and a payment that needs currency conversion adds another 1%, on top of the base card rate. Both toggles stack.

Pricing to net a target amount

Switch to Price to net an amount to gross up a charge, so Stripe's fee comes out of the buyer's payment rather than a fixed price you've already quoted.

Amount to charge = (target + $0.30) ÷ (1 − rate)

What the standard rate leaves out

  • Volume discounts and other countries have their own pricing. This calculator is US-only: check stripe.com/pricing for your account's country.
  • Non-card methods (ACH, wallets, Buy Now Pay Later) have separate rates, not covered here.
  • Disputes carry a flat fee, currently $15, charged whether you win or lose. See the chargeback cost calculator.
