What Shopify charges
Three things make up your Shopify bill: the plan, the card fees on each order, and a third-party transaction fee if you take payments through an outside gateway instead of Shopify Payments.
| US plan | Price (yearly / monthly billing) | Standard cards | Premium cards | Third-party fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29 / $39 | 2.9% + 30¢ | 3.5% + 30¢ | 2% |
| Grow | $79 / $105 | 2.7% + 30¢ | 3.3% + 30¢ | 1% |
| Advanced | $299 / $399 | 2.5% + 30¢ | 3.1% + 30¢ | 0.6% |
| Plus | From $2,300 | 2.25% + 30¢ | 2.95% + 30¢ | 0.2% |
In the US, premium means domestic American Express and business or corporate cards. Cards issued outside the US add 1%. UK, Canadian and Australian stores have their own rates, built into the calculator.
Example (the calculator's starting numbers, US Basic billed yearly)
- Sales
- $20,000 from 400 orders
- Card mix
- 85% standard (2.9%), 10% premium (3.5%), 5% foreign (3.9%)
- Percentage fees
- 20,000 × 3.01% = $602
- Fixed fees
- 400 × $0.30 = $120
$602 + $120 + $29 plan = $751 a month, or 3.76% of sales.
The third-party gateway fee
- It doesn't apply to Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, PayPal Express Checkout (alongside Shopify Payments), or manual methods like cash on delivery and bank transfer.
- Plus stores that use Shopify Payments as their only provider don't pay it.
- Stores created on or after 12 May 2025 pay it on the part of an order paid with store credit or gift cards.
See your transaction fees in Settings → Billing, then open a past bill. To see your card rates, go to Settings → Payments, click Manage under Shopify Payments, then More actions → Manage payment methods → View payment rates.
When a bigger plan pays for itself
Each plan step lowers the card rate by 0.2 to 0.4 points. On enough sales that saving beats the higher plan price. The bar chart shows your monthly total on each plan, and the note tells you when another plan is cheaper.
Plus is priced from $2,300 a month on a 1- or 3-year term, so its figure is a starting point. If you're comparing Shopify with selling on Etsy, the Etsy vs Shopify calculator adds marketplace fees. Rates last checked 30 Sep 2026.
Questions people ask

What are Shopify's rates in the UK?
On Basic, 2% + 25p for UK cards and 3.1% + 25p for Amex and international cards, with the plan at £19 a month billed yearly. Grow is 1.7%, Advanced 1.5% and Plus 1.3%.
