Average order value

$62.00

$21,700 across 350 orders. To reach $28,000 from the same 350 orders, AOV would need to be $80.00, a rise of 29%.

Two levers get you to a revenue goal: raise AOV (bundles, free-shipping thresholds, upsells) or raise order count (traffic, conversion rate). Most stores need some of both.

AOV, and the two ways to grow revenue

Average order value = revenue ÷ orders

Example: the default numbers

Revenue
$21,700
Orders
350
Revenue goal
$28,000

AOV is $21,700 ÷ 350 = $62.00. To hit $28,000 from the same 350 orders, AOV would need to reach $80.00, a 29% rise. Alternatively, at today's $62 AOV you'd need 452 orders, 102 more than now.

Every revenue goal breaks down into raising AOV, raising order count, or some mix of both. Seeing both paths side by side makes it easier to pick a realistic plan.

Tracking AOV on Shopify and WooCommerce

  1. 01

    Shopify

Open Analytics → Reports → Average order value over time to see it trend without doing the division yourself.

  2. 02

    WooCommerce

Analytics → Overview shows average order value for the selected date range alongside total orders and revenue.

  3. 03

    Raising AOV

Free-shipping thresholds set just above today's AOV, bundles, and post-purchase upsells are the usual levers. Test one at a time so you know what actually moved it.

What can distort AOV

  • A handful of large orders (wholesale, corporate gifting) can pull the average well above what a typical customer pays. Check the median order value too if you have a wide spread.
  • Tax and shipping. Confirm whether your revenue figure includes them, and be consistent between periods you're comparing.
  • Discounts and refunds. A discount period usually shows a lower AOV even with a healthy business, since price per item drops while units may rise.

Questions people ask

What's a good average order value?

It depends entirely on your category and price point. Track your own AOV over time, and compare it with your product costs and shipping thresholds rather than another store's number.

How do I raise average order value?

Common levers are a free-shipping threshold just above your current AOV, bundles, and upsells at checkout or on the product page. The calculator shows how much of a lift you actually need before you pick a tactic.

Should AOV include tax and shipping?

Either is fine as long as you're consistent. Shopify and WooCommerce's built-in AOV reports typically use order total, which includes both.

Is it better to raise AOV or get more orders?

Usually some of both. The calculator shows the AOV needed to hit a goal from today's order count, and separately the orders needed at today's AOV, so you can judge which is more realistic.
