Customer churn vs. revenue churn
Customer churn is the share of subscribers who canceled. Revenue churn is the share of MRR lost to cancellations and downgrades. They usually move together, but revenue churn running ahead of customer churn is a specific warning sign: people are downgrading or skipping more before they cancel outright.
Example: the default numbers
- Subscribers at start
- 850
- Canceled this month
- 34
- MRR at start
- $42,500
- MRR lost
- $1,700
Customer churn is 34 ÷ 850 = 4%. Revenue churn is also 4% here. Annualized, that 4% monthly churn compounds to about 38.7% a year, and an average subscriber sticks around roughly 25 months.
For subscribe-and-save specifically
- A skipped order isn't a cancellation, but it still cuts this month's revenue. Track it separately with the subscription revenue calculator, which has its own skip-rate field.
- Shopify Subscriptions and WooCommerce Subscriptions both report active subscriber counts and cancellations, which is what this calculator needs; check your subscription app's own dashboard or export for the numbers.
- Annualized churn compounds, so even a churn rate that looks small month to month can mean losing well over a third of subscribers across a year.
Questions people ask
What's the difference between customer churn and revenue churn?
Customer churn counts people who canceled. Revenue churn counts the MRR lost, including from downgrades and skipped orders, not just outright cancellations. They can differ even when subscriber counts look stable.
What's a good monthly churn rate for a subscription box?
There's no fixed benchmark, and it varies by category and price point. Watch your own trend, and compare revenue churn with customer churn: if revenue churn runs ahead, downgrades are eating into growth before people fully cancel.
How is average subscriber lifespan calculated?
As 1 divided by the monthly churn rate. A 4% monthly churn rate implies an average lifespan of 25 months.
Why does annualized churn look so much bigger than monthly churn?
Because it compounds: a 4% monthly churn rate means roughly 96% of subscribers stay each month, and 0.96 to the power of 12 is about 61%, so about 39% churn over a full year.
