"Free" software, real running costs

WooCommerce the plugin costs nothing, which is why "how much does WooCommerce cost" doesn't have a single-number answer: the real cost is hosting, any paid extensions you add, and what payment processing takes out of every sale. This calculator adds those up into a monthly figure and a first-year total (including one-time theme and build costs).

monthly cost = hosting + (domain ÷ 12) + (extensions ÷ 12) + (orders × AOV × processing rate) + (orders × processing fixed fee)

Using your own numbers

  • The three extension price fields are editable with typical defaults, not live prices: check the actual extension's page at woocommerce.com/products (or a third-party marketplace) for its current price before relying on the total.
  • WooPayments' standard US online rate (2.9% + $0.30) is the default processing rate; swap in your own gateway's rate if you use a different one, or your country's rate if it's not the US.
  • Set extension prices to 0 for anything covered by core WooCommerce now; see the plugin stack auditor for which features that covers.

Questions people ask

Is WooCommerce really free?

The core plugin is free and open source, yes. What most stores actually pay for is hosting (WordPress and WooCommerce need somewhere to run), a theme, extensions for features core doesn't cover, and a cut of every sale to a payment processor.

Why do the extension prices look different from what I'm quoted?

Marketplace prices change and often vary by tier (number of sites, support length). Treat the defaults here as a starting point and use the real price from the extension's own page.

How does this compare to Shopify's cost?

Shopify bundles hosting, a payment processor and a base feature set into one monthly plan fee; WooCommerce assembles the same pieces separately, which can be cheaper at some scales and more expensive at others depending on what you need.

Does this include a domain name?

Yes, as a small monthly average from an annual price, alongside hosting, extensions and processing.
