Where this text comes from

  1. 01

    Open your Templates report

In wp-admin, go to WooCommerce → Status. Scroll to the Templates section (or click “Get system report”, then “Copy for support” for a plain-text version).

  2. 02

    Copy the Templates block

Select the Overrides rows, including each file path and any “Version X is out of date” lines.

  3. 03

    Paste it here

The checker reads any pasted text for a template file path followed by a version warning, so either the on-screen table or the copied report text works.

WooCommerce compares the version comment at the top of your theme's copy of a template file to the version comment in its own copy of the same file. If yours is older, it's listed as an override that's out of date, meaning WooCommerce shipped changes (sometimes just a comment, sometimes a real fix or new feature) that your theme's copy doesn't have.

Fixing an outdated override

  • Compare your theme's file (in yourtheme/woocommerce/…) against the current version in WooCommerce's own templates/ folder to see what changed.
  • If your override never actually changed anything from the original, delete it. WooCommerce's own copy will take over and you'll never fall behind on it again.
  • If it has real customizations, manually merge WooCommerce's changes into your copy, then update the version number in your file's doc comment to match.
  • After updating, WooCommerce's own “Learn how to update” link on the Status page points at the latest guidance for this exact process.

An outdated override isn't automatically broken; it's a warning that a newer template exists. Some changes are cosmetic and safe to ignore for a while, others (checkout security fixes, new required markup) matter more. When in doubt, update sooner rather than later.

Questions people ask

Why does WooCommerce say a template is missing its version header?

Every core template file starts with a @version comment. If your theme's copy is missing that comment entirely (common when a template was copied a long time ago, or hand-written), WooCommerce can't tell how old it is, so it flags it as needing a check rather than showing a specific version gap.

Is it safe to just delete an old override?

Only if you (or whoever built the theme) never actually changed anything in it. Open the file and compare it to WooCommerce's original first; deleting a genuinely customized template reverts that customization.

Does a plugin (not a theme) show up here too?

Yes. Any plugin that copies WooCommerce templates into its own woocommerce/ folder shows up the same way as a theme override, and the file path in the report tells you which one.

How often should I check this?

After every WooCommerce update, since that's when new template versions ship. Many stores check it as a five-minute step right after clicking update in wp-admin.
