The three-email sequence that works

EmailWhenJob
11 hour afterA helpful reminder. No discount: many people just got distracted.
224 hours afterAnswer the hesitation: shipping, returns, reviews, sizing.
372 hours afterA nudge with urgency, and the incentive if you use one.

Keeping the discount for the last email matters. Offer it in the first and you teach customers that leaving a cart gets them a code, and you give away margin to people who would have bought anyway.

Setting it up

  1. 01

    Shopify

Go to Marketing → Automations and start from the abandoned checkout or abandoned cart template. Paste each email into the steps and set the delays to match.

  2. 02

    Klaviyo

Create a flow triggered by Started Checkout (or Added to Cart if you track it), add time delays between emails, and paste in the copy. Replace [First name] and [Cart items] with Klaviyo's personalisation and dynamic product blocks.

  3. 03

    WooCommerce

WooCommerce doesn't send abandoned cart emails on its own. Use your email platform's WooCommerce integration or a cart recovery plugin, then paste the sequence in.

Questions people ask

When should the first email go out?

About an hour after the cart is abandoned, while the purchase is still on their mind. Sooner can feel intrusive; much later and many will have bought elsewhere.

Should I offer a discount?

If you do, keep it for the last email and use unique or expiring codes. Test a sequence with no discount first: many stores recover plenty without one.

What's the difference between abandoned cart and abandoned checkout?

Abandoned checkout means the shopper started checkout and entered an email. Abandoned cart means they added items but you may not know who they are, so these emails only reach known or logged-in customers.

Can I use these for SMS too?

Texts need to be much shorter. Use the first email's angle, keep it under 160 characters, and check it with the SMS character counter.
