Email Flow Planner
Describe your store and get a ranked plan of which email flows to build first, with the trigger, message timing and exit for each one.
How the plan is ranked
- 01
Catch people close to buying
Abandoned checkout and the Welcome series come first, unless you already run them.
- 02
Look after new customers
Post-purchase comes next, then Abandoned cart or Browse abandonment.
- 03
Match your products
Win-back and Replenishment suit products people buy again. Back in stock suits products that sell out, and Price drop suits stores that change prices.
- 04
Leave the extras for later
Birthday, VIP welcome and Sunset (for unengaged subscribers) come once the core flows are running.
Flows you already run are left out of the first group, and a thin one (say, a single abandoned checkout email) comes back as an improvement. High-price, rarely repeated purchases push browse and cart flows ahead of win-back.
Triggers by email tool
| Flow | Klaviyo trigger | Shopify Messaging template |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome series | Added to list | Welcome new subscribers with a discount series |
| Abandoned checkout | Started Checkout, filtered to no order since | Recover abandoned checkout |
| Abandoned cart | Added to Cart | Recover abandoned cart |
| Browse abandonment | Viewed Product | Convert abandoned product browse |
| Post-purchase | Placed Order or Fulfilled Order | Thank customers after they purchase |
| Win-back | Added to segment (no order in X days) | Win back customers |
| Price drop | Price drop | No template: use an app |
| Birthday | Date property | Celebrate customer birthday |
The plan uses only these trigger and template names. For Omnisend, Mailchimp or another tool, it describes each trigger in general terms so you can find your tool's matching automation.
Default timings
- Welcome series: immediately, then around days 1, 3, 5 and 7.
- Abandoned checkout: 1 hour, 24 hours and 72 hours after.
- Post-purchase: thank-you 1 day after the order, tips on delivery, a review request 7 to 30 days after delivery.
- Win-back: when a customer passes your usual reorder gap, then about 14 and 30 days later.
- Price drop: as soon as the price changes. Klaviyo advises against a delay.
These are starting points, not benchmarks. Adjust them to how quickly your customers usually decide and reorder.
Before you switch flows on
- Give every flow an exit. Anyone who orders should leave the welcome, browse, cart and win-back flows.
- Stop flows overlapping. Exclude people in abandoned checkout from browse abandonment, so nobody gets two emails in an hour.
- Consent and the legal basics. Marketing flows go only to subscribers. Under the US CAN-SPAM Act, each email needs your postal address and a working opt-out.
- On WooCommerce, check your email tool's integration sends the events a flow needs (Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Started Checkout) before you build it.
Questions people ask
Which Klaviyo flows should an ecommerce store build first?
Usually abandoned checkout and a welcome series, then post-purchase and browse or cart abandonment. The planner adjusts the order to your products, prices and what you already run.
Does it work if I don't use Klaviyo?
Yes. Pick Shopify Messaging for its own template names, or Omnisend, Mailchimp or Other for general triggers you can match in your tool.
How many flows do I need?
Three or four well-built flows beat ten half-finished ones. Build the first group, check they're working, then add the next ones.
What's the difference between a flow and a campaign?
A flow sends automatically when someone does something, such as signing up or leaving a checkout. A campaign is a one-off send to a list, like a Black Friday email.
Can it write the emails too?
Each recommended flow links to a generator for its emails, such as the welcome email generator and the abandoned cart email generator.
