Two emails, two jobs

EmailWhenJob
It's backAs soon as it's restockedTell the people who asked. Short, with the product and button up top.
Last reminder24 hours later, to people who haven't boughtA shorter nudge that adds something new, such as the sizes left.

Waitlist shoppers already asked for this product, so the email doesn't need to sell it again. Choose Send to: All subscribers when you announce a restock to your whole list; the email then introduces the product instead of assuming they asked.

Urgency that stays honest

Urgency only helps when it's true. The generator bases it on the stock facts you give under Details: how many units came in, how fast the last batch sold, when the next one is due. Without facts it won't invent scarcity.

  • Gentle: a light nudge to order while it's available.
  • Strong: leads with your stock facts. With none given, it writes “Only [quantity] in this restock” for you to fill in or delete.
  • None: just the news.

A made-up “only 3 left” misleads shoppers, and once people notice, they stop trusting your next alert.

Setting up restock alerts

  1. 01

    Shopify

Shopify Messaging's automation templates don't include a back in stock alert, so use an app that adds a Notify me button to sold-out products and sends the email.

  2. 02

    Klaviyo

Build a flow triggered by Subscribed to Back in Stock. Each subscriber waits at a back in stock delay until the item is restocked, then Klaviyo sends in batches. The same flow can send SMS.

  3. 03

    WooCommerce

Add restock alerts with an extension such as WooCommerce's Back In Stock Notifications, then paste the copy into its notification email.

Pitfalls

  • Say which variants are back. If only some sizes or colors returned, say so, or people click through to a size that's still sold out.
  • Don't remind people who bought. Exclude anyone who ordered the product after the first email.
  • Keep the waitlist separate from the newsletter. Treat a sign-up as a request for that one alert, and add people to marketing emails only if they opted in to those too.

Questions people ask

When should a back in stock email go out?

As soon as the product is available again. Restock tools such as Klaviyo's send it automatically once inventory reaches a minimum you set.

Should I send one email or two?

Send one to the waitlist when stock arrives and, if stock is still there, a shorter reminder about a day later to people who haven't bought.

How do I add urgency without lying?

Use real numbers: units in this restock, how fast the last batch sold, when the next one is due. If you don't have them, a gentle “order while it's here” is enough.

Can I text restock alerts too?

Yes, to customers who opted in to texts. Keep each one to a single 160-character segment and check it with the SMS character counter.
