Review Request Email Generator
Write a review request and reminder, timed to how long your product takes to judge, with an optional photo-review incentive that follows FTC rules.
Timing by product type
Ask too early and the customer hasn't used the product. Ask too late and they've moved on. Pick the product type and the Send line follows:
| Product type | Request | Reminder |
|---|---|---|
| Used straight away: clothing, accessories, gadgets | 7 days after delivery | 5 days later |
| Takes a few uses: food, kitchenware, bedding | 14 days after delivery | 5 days later |
| Takes weeks to judge: skincare, anything used occasionally | 30 days after delivery | 5 days later |
The reminder goes only to customers who haven't reviewed yet. Time it from delivery, not the order date, if your email tool can: a slow delivery otherwise eats into the time they've had with the product.
Photo-review incentives that stay compliant
You can offer a reward for reviews, but not one that depends on the review being positive. The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule bans incentives conditioned on sentiment, whether that's said outright or only implied. Its own example of an implied condition: “Tell us how much you loved your visit… and get a $5 coupon.”
- Reward the action, not the opinion: “15% off your next order for any review with a photo, whatever your rating.”
- Keep “love” and “favorite” away from the reward. The generator never pairs them.
- Disclose it. The FTC's endorsement guidance says people who got a discount to encourage their review need to disclose it. Many review apps can label incentivized reviews.
- Ask everyone. The FTC warns that asking only customers you think are happy could violate the FTC Act.
Setting it up
- 01
Shopify
Most review apps send their own request emails: paste the copy into the app's request template and set its delay. In Shopify Messaging, you can add the request to the post-purchase flow started from Thank customers after they purchase.
- 02
Klaviyo
Trigger on Fulfilled Order (or a delivery event if your integration sends one), wait the number of days from the Send line, and add a filter that skips anyone who already reviewed.
- 03
WooCommerce
WooCommerce has product reviews built in but doesn't email customers to ask. Use a review extension or your email platform's WooCommerce integration.
Questions people ask
When should I send a review request email?
Once the customer has had time to use the product: about 7 days after delivery for things used straight away, 14 for products that take a few uses, and 30 for products like skincare.
Can I offer a discount for a review?
Yes, if it's for any honest review, positive or negative. Say so in the email, give it to everyone who qualifies, and label those reviews as incentivized.
Can I send unhappy customers to support instead of the review form?
Offer help alongside the review request, not instead of it. Steering only happy customers to reviews is the kind of selective asking the FTC warns about.
Should I send a reminder?
One is enough. It goes 5 days after the first email, only to customers who haven't reviewed, and it's shorter.
Is this different from the post-purchase emails?
It's the review email on its own, with more control over timing and incentives. For the full thank-you, how-to-use and cross-sell sequence, use the post-purchase email generator.
