Your details

The domain or subdomain you're connecting to Shopify, without https://.

Just so the instructions remind you not to touch MX and TXT records.

Records to set at your DNS host

shopify-dns-records.txt
Type: A Name: @ Value: 23.227.38.65
Type: AAAA Name: @ Value: 2620:0127:f00f:5::
Type: CNAME Name: www Value: shops.myshopify.com

Delete first: any other A, AAAA or CNAME record already on the same name(s) above (an old host, a page builder, a "parking page" record). Having more than one causes browsers to pick one at random.
Leave alone: every MX and TXT record (SPF, DKIM, DMARC). Email doesn't depend on the records above, and deleting MX/TXT records breaks mail delivery.

Where to add these: My Products > Domain > DNS > Manage DNS. Use "Add new record" for each row, and the pencil icon to edit or delete an existing one.

Then in Shopify admin: Settings > Domains > Connect existing domain, enter the domain, and Shopify verifies it automatically. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to fully spread, though it's usually much faster.

After adding these, run our Shopify SSL Pending Diagnoser or Shopify Domain Checker if the store doesn't connect within a few hours.

The three records Shopify needs

Connecting a domain you bought elsewhere means pointing three records at Shopify: an A record and an AAAA record on the root domain (or a single CNAME if you're connecting a subdomain), and a CNAME for www.

TypeNameValue
A@23.227.38.65
AAAA@2620:0127:f00f:5::
CNAMEwwwshops.myshopify.com

A subdomain (like shop.yourstore.com) only needs one record: a CNAME from that subdomain to shops.myshopify.com.

Finding the DNS screen at your host

  • GoDaddy: My Products > Domain > DNS > Manage DNS.
  • Namecheap: Domain List > Manage > Advanced DNS > Host Records.
  • Cloudflare: your domain > DNS > Records, with every Shopify record set to DNS only (grey cloud), not Proxied.
  • Squarespace Domains (formerly Google Domains): Domains > your domain > DNS Settings.

Whatever host you use, delete any other A, AAAA or CNAME record sitting on the same name first: an old host's record left in place makes browsers pick a host at random.

Questions people ask

Will this break my email?

No. Email runs on MX and TXT records, which this generator doesn't touch. Just don't delete those when you clean up old A/CNAME records.

How long does it take to connect?

Often under an hour, but DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to fully spread. Shopify admin shows the domain as connected once it sees the records.

Do I need the AAAA (IPv6) record?

The store works without it, but Shopify's own setup instructions include it, and its absence can occasionally slow down certificate issuance. Add it.

My domain is on Cloudflare. Anything different?

Yes: every record has to be DNS only (grey cloud). A proxied record still resolves and can make the domain look connected while permanently blocking Shopify's SSL certificate.
