How cart permalinks work

https://yourstore.com/cart/{variant_id}:{quantity}
Multiple items: comma separate the pairs, e.g. 123:2,456:1.

Opening this link adds the item(s) to the shopper's cart and lands them on the cart page. It's a long-standing Shopify theme feature, not an API call, so it works the same on any Shopify theme without setup.

Add ?discount=CODE to apply a discount once the shopper reaches checkout, &note= for a cart note, and any UTM parameters for attribution: none of these change what the shopper sees on the cart page itself, only what happens at checkout or in your analytics.

Finding a variant ID

In Shopify admin, open the product, click the specific variant, and copy the number at the end of that page's URL. For a single-variant product, it's the same as the product's default variant ID.

Questions people ask

Does the discount apply immediately on the cart page?

No, only at checkout. The cart page total shown to the shopper isn't discounted by this link.

Can I link straight to a specific product page instead?

Yes, just link to the product URL normally; use this tool when you want the item already in the cart, for example from an email or an ad.

Will this work for a sold-out or unpublished variant?

No, Shopify won't add an unavailable variant to the cart. Test every link before sending it out.

Is there a limit on how many items I can combine?

No documented hard limit, but very long comma-separated lists get unwieldy. Keep it to a handful of items for a link people will actually click.
