Why this link doesn't expire

Shopify's own Preview → Copy link button on a theme builds a URL with a preview_theme_id parameter. That link works for anyone, without a Shopify login, but it expires: 2 days for a visitor link, or 30 days if you were signed into the admin when you copied it.

A link built with just the preview_theme_id parameter (what this tool generates) uses the same mechanism and keeps working indefinitely, since the parameter itself, not a time-limited token, is what tells Shopify which theme to show.

Finding your theme ID

  1. 01

    From the theme editor

    Open the theme in Online Store → Themes → Customize. The URL contains /admin/themes/THEME_ID/editor; copy the number.

  2. 02

    From the Preview link

    In Online Store → Themes, click the theme's ⋯ → Preview, then copy the link Shopify gives you: the number after preview_theme_id= is the theme ID.

Questions people ask

Does this work on my published (live) theme?

It can, but there's little reason to: your live theme is already visible at your normal store URL. This is most useful for an unpublished theme you're building or reviewing.

Do visitors need to be logged in?

No, on a regular (non-password-protected) store, anyone with the link can view the preview without a Shopify account.

What if my store has a storefront password?

Anyone you send the link to also needs your storefront password (Online Store → Preferences → Restrict visitor access), since the theme preview doesn't bypass it.

Where does the QR code come from?

It's drawn in your browser. The preview link isn't sent to any QR service.
