How the cost of a print is worked out

Machine cost = filament + electricity + printer wear + maintenance
Cost per print = machine cost ÷ (1 − failure rate) + labor + packaging

Example: a 120 g part that prints in 6.5 hours

Filament
120 g ÷ 1,000 g × $22 = $2.64
Electricity
6.5 h × 0.15 kW × $0.17 = $0.17
Printer wear + maintenance
$800 ÷ 5,000 h × 6.5 = $1.04, plus $0.65
Allowing for 8% failures
4.50 ÷ 0.92 = $4.89
Labor + packaging
15 min at $20/h = $5.00, plus $1.50

Cost is $11.39 a print. At a 100% markup, charge $22.77.

Getting accurate inputs

  • Filament and time come from your slicer's estimate for the exact settings you'll print with.
  • Power draw varies by printer and bed temperature. A plug-in power meter gives your real average.
  • Electricity price is on your bill. The $0.17 per kWh default is only an example.
  • Failure rate is failed prints divided by all prints over the last month or two.

Selling 3D prints online

  • Set a minimum order. Labor dominates small parts. A minimum charge or batching parts on one plate protects you.
  • Custom quotes. On Shopify or WooCommerce, sell standard items as products and handle custom jobs with a quote form and a draft order or invoice.
  • Price by printer hour for long jobs, so a 20-hour print pays for the work it pushes back.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to 3D print something?

Material is often the smallest part. In the default example, filament is $2.64 of an $11.39 cost, and labor is $5.

How much electricity does a 3D printer use?

It depends on the printer and bed temperature. Measure it with a power meter and enter the average watts. At 150 W, a 6.5-hour print uses about 1 kWh.

What markup should I use for 3D printing?

Enough that profit per printer hour beats what the machine could earn on other work. The calculator shows profit per hour of printer time.

Should I charge for failed prints?

Yes, as part of your cost. Dividing by (1 − failure rate) spreads the cost of failures across the prints that succeed.
