How to calculate a discount
Example: the default numbers
- Original price
- $79.99
- Discount
- 25%
79.99 × 0.75 = $59.9925, so the sale price is $59.99 and you save $20.00.
Add a tax rate if tax goes on top at checkout. Tax is worked out on the discounted price.
For store owners: showing a discount
- Shopify: set the Compare-at price higher than the Price on the product to show it as on sale.
- WooCommerce: enter a Sale price on the product's General tab.
- Codes and automatic discounts are set up in Shopify under Discounts, and in WooCommerce under Marketing → Coupons.
- Before you run it, check how much extra you need to sell with the discount break-even calculator.
Two discounts aren't added together
A 30% sale plus an extra 20% off usually means 20% off the sale price, which is 44% off in total, not 50%. Use the stacked discount calculator for that.
Questions people ask
How do I work out 25% off?
Multiply the price by 0.75. $79.99 × 0.75 = $59.99.
How do I find what percent off a sale is?
Divide the saving by the original price. $80 down to $60 is $20 ÷ $80 = 25% off.
Is tax charged on the original or the discounted price?
Usually on the discounted price when the store gives the discount. Rules for manufacturer coupons can differ by state or country.
What's the difference between 50% off and buy one get one free?
If you buy two, they cost the same. If you only want one, 50% off is better, because BOGO needs you to buy two.
