How net profit per order is worked out

The calculator splits costs into two kinds. Per-order costs (product, shipping, ads, payment fees, refunds) come off every order. Monthly costs (your Shopify plan, apps and anything else fixed) are spread across your orders.

Net profit per order = order value + shipping charged − refunds − product − shipping and packaging − ads − payment fees − (plan + apps + other fixed) ÷ orders

Example: the default numbers (US, Basic plan paid yearly)

Order value + shipping charged
$65 + $5 = $70.00
Refunds (3% of $65)
−$1.95
Product, shipping + packaging, ads
−$24.00, −$8.20, −$18.00
Shopify Payments (2.9% + 30¢ on $70)
−$2.33
Plan $29 + apps $60, over 300 orders
−$0.30

Profit before fixed costs is $15.52 an order. After the plan and apps it's $15.22 an order, or 15.52 × 300 − 89 = $4,567 a month.

Plan prices and card rates follow the currency you pick: US for USD, UK for GBP, Ireland for EUR, Canada for CAD and Australia for AUD. If your country's rates differ, switch on Enter my own plan price and card rate.

Shopify plan prices and card rates used

US planMonthlyPaid yearlyOnline card rateThird-party gateway fee

Advanced$399$299/mo2.5% + 30¢0.6%
Plusfrom $2,300from $2,300/mo2.25% + 30¢0.2%

The third-party fee only applies if you take payments through another provider instead of Shopify Payments. It comes on top of that provider's own fee, which you enter in Gateway fee. Amex, international cards and currency conversion can cost more than the standard rate.

Where the profit usually hides

  • Ads per order is usually the biggest cost after product. Check how far it can rise with the break-even ROAS calculator.
  • Apps add up. Every $100 a month across 300 orders is 33¢ an order. Go through your Shopify bill and remove apps you no longer use.
  • Plan choice matters above a certain sales level, because higher plans have lower card rates. Compare them with the Shopify plan calculator.

Questions people ask

Does Shopify take a percentage of sales?

With Shopify Payments you pay the card rate for your plan (2.9% + 30¢ online on US Basic). If you use a third-party gateway, Shopify adds 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% depending on your plan, on top of the provider's fee.

Should ad spend be in my profit per order?

Yes. Divide monthly ad spend by orders. Leaving it out is the most common reason a store looks profitable on paper and isn't in the bank.

Why does the calculator treat refunds as a full loss?

It's the cautious choice. If most returns come back resellable, lower the refund rate to reflect only what you actually lose.

How many orders do I need to break even?

Monthly fixed costs divided by profit per order before fixed costs. With the default numbers that's $89 ÷ $15.52, or 6 orders a month.

Are Shopify's prices the same everywhere?

No. Plans and card rates vary by country. The calculator uses the pricing page for the country that matches your currency, and you can enter your own.
