The jewelry pricing formula
Metal is priced by the troy ounce, which is 31.1034768 grams (NIST). Spot price is for pure metal, so the calculator multiplies by the alloy's purity, then adds your supplier's premium and metal lost as scrap.
Example: a sterling silver ring with a stone
- Metal
- 6 g ÷ 31.1035 × $40 × 92.5% × 1.15 × 1.10 = $9.03
- Stones, findings, packaging
- $12 + $4 + $2
- Materials
- $27.03
- Labor
- 1.5 h × $30 = $45.00
Wholesale = 27.03 × 2 + 45 = $99.06. Retail = 99.06 × 2 = $198.12.
The $40 silver and $3,800 gold spot prices are only examples. Enter the day's price from your bullion dealer or metal supplier.

For gold-filled, plated or base metals, choose Other metal and enter your supplier's price per gram.
Selling jewelry online
- Reprice with the metal. The bars show how retail moves if metal rises or falls 10 to 20%. Recheck pieces heavy in gold often.
- Variants. Offer metals as variants in Shopify or WooCommerce so each carries its own price.
- Describe the metal accurately. In the US, “sterling” is only for silver of at least 925/1,000 fineness.
Questions people ask
What is the standard jewelry pricing formula?
A common one is (materials × 2) + labor for wholesale, then wholesale × 2 for retail. Some makers use total cost × 3 instead: switch Pricing formula to compare.
How do I convert grams to troy ounces?
Divide by 31.1034768. Six grams is 0.1929 troy ounces.
Why add a premium over spot?
Wire, sheet and casting grain cost more than raw bullion. Compare an invoice with that day's spot price to find your premium.
Should labor be multiplied too?
Not in the classic formula, which is why pieces that take long to make can end up underpriced. Raise your hourly rate if that's the case.
