The deepest safe discount

Every quantity break comes out of your margin. The calculator works out the deepest discount that still leaves your minimum margin, then checks each tier against it.

Deepest safe discount = 1 − unit cost ÷ ((1 − minimum margin) × list price)

Example: the default numbers

List price
$24.00
Unit cost (product + other)
$9.00 + $1.50 = $10.50
Minimum margin
45%

1 − 10.50 ÷ (0.55 × 24) = 20.5%, a floor price of $19.09. Tier 4 at 22% off goes below it. A 60-unit order at tier 3 (15% off) costs the buyer $1,224 and earns you 48.5%.

All-units vs stepped breaks

  • Whole order at tier price (all-units): buy 60 and every unit gets the 50+ price. Simple to explain and the most common.
  • Only units above each break (stepped or graduated): the first 9 are at list, units 10 to 24 at tier 1, and so on. It protects margin on big orders but is harder to show on a product page.

Setting up quantity breaks

  1. 01

    Shopify B2B

Go to Markets → Catalogs, open the catalog, then Manage → Manage products and pricing. Shopify allows up to 10 volume price breaks per product, applied per variant.

  2. 02

    Shopify retail stores

Buy X get Y or amount-off discounts with a minimum quantity can mimic simple breaks. Check how they combine with the discount combination checker.

  3. 03

    WooCommerce

Core WooCommerce doesn't have quantity pricing. Use a dynamic pricing or wholesale extension.

Questions people ask

How big should volume discounts be?

Small enough to stay above your margin floor, and spaced so the next tier is a stretch for a typical order. That's what lifts order size.

What is tiered pricing?

Lower unit prices at higher quantities. The buyer pays less per unit, and you get a bigger order and lower handling cost per unit.

Should the discount apply to the whole order?

All-units pricing is easier to understand and sells better. Stepped pricing protects margin on very large orders. Try both with the switch.

Does the calculator include shipping?

Put any per-unit shipping or handling you pay in Other costs per unit. For big orders, per-unit shipping often falls, which can fund a deeper tier.
