Price Match Policy Generator
Write a price match policy that names the competitors you match, what qualifies and what you exclude.
What a price match policy has to pin down
A vague price match promise gets gamed. A clear one sells. The generator turns your rules into a policy with these parts:
- Who you match: named competitors, or a clear rule such as "sold and shipped by the retailer itself".
- What qualifies: the identical item (brand, model, size, color, condition), in stock, at a current price you can check.
- What you exclude: marketplace sellers, clearance, coupon codes, member-only prices, bundles, flash sales.
- Price adjustments after purchase, if you offer them: the window, whose price drops count, and how the difference is refunded.
- How to ask, and the limits you set.
Pick one of three scopes: price match before purchase, match plus adjustments after purchase, or adjustments on your own sale prices only.
Keeping the promise honest
A price match policy is an advertising claim. The FTC's Guides Against Deceptive Pricing say a store comparing its price with competitors' should be reasonably certain the higher price is one at which substantial sales are really being made in the area (16 CFR 233.2). So the generator:
- never writes "lowest price guaranteed" or "we beat any price" unless you offer it;
- never names a competitor you didn't name;
- doesn't add a catch-all "we can refuse any request" clause that would empty the promise. It keeps only your right to check the price and to decline requests that don't meet the stated rules.
Publishing it and handling requests
- 01
Shopify
Go to Online Store → Pages → Add page and paste the HTML. Link it from product pages (a line near the price works well) and your footer under Content → Menus.
- 02
WooCommerce
Create a page, paste the HTML into a Custom HTML block, and link it from product pages and the footer.
- 03
Handle matches
Check the competitor link, then give the lower price with a one-time discount code or a partial refund after the order. Log each match so you can spot abuse.
This is a template, not legal advice. Make sure your team can honor every promise in it.
Questions people ask
Is this legal advice?
No. It's a template that avoids common overclaims, but check local advertising rules and have it reviewed if price matching is central to your marketing.
Should I match Amazon prices?
Many stores match Amazon only when Amazon itself sells and ships the item, not third-party Marketplace sellers. Say which one you mean.
What's the difference between a price match and a price adjustment?
A price match gives a competitor's lower price before or at purchase. A price adjustment refunds the difference if a price drops after the customer buys, within a set window.
How do I stop abuse?
Require the identical item in stock, a current price you can check, and a limit per customer. Exclude marketplace sellers and prices that need a login or coupon.
Can I use the phrase "lowest price guaranteed"?
Only if you honor it on every covered item. Otherwise it's a claim your store can't back up, which is why the generator leaves it out unless you offer it.
