What the EU withdrawal function requires

Directive (EU) 2023/2673 added Article 11a to the Consumer Rights Directive. EU countries had to apply it from 19 June 2026. If customers buy through your website, they must also be able to withdraw through it:

  1. 01

    A labelled button or link

Labelled “withdraw from contract here” or an unambiguous equivalent, easy to read, prominent and available for the whole withdrawal period.

  2. 02

    An online withdrawal statement

Lets the customer give or confirm their name, the contract (order) details, and where to send the confirmation.

  3. 03

    A confirmation button

Labelled only “confirm withdrawal” or an unambiguous equivalent.

  4. 04

    An acknowledgement

Sent without undue delay on a durable medium such as email, with the content of the withdrawal and the date and time it was submitted.

A withdrawal submitted before the period ends counts as in time. This is a technical guide, not legal advice: each country's own law applies the rules, so check with a lawyer for your markets.

The official labels

The directive gives the wording in each official EU language. A few of them:

LanguageWithdrawal buttonConfirmation button

Frenchrenoncer au contrat iciconfirmer la rétractation

Italianrecedere dal contratto quiconferma recesso

The tool outputs all 24 languages, plus form text, the acknowledgement email and the model sentence for your policy.

Setting it up on Shopify and WooCommerce

  1. 01

    Shopify: return and cancellation rules

Go to Settings → Policies → Return and cancellation rules. Turn on self-serve returns and cancellations, set the return window to at least 14 days from delivery of the last item, and add a navigation link to the customer account orders page.

  2. 02

    Shopify: guest customers

Make sure customers who checked out as guests also have a way in, such as a form asking for order number and email.

  3. 03

    WooCommerce

WooCommerce has no built-in withdrawal button. Add a footer link to a form page (name, order number, email), send an automatic confirmation email, or use a withdrawal plugin from WordPress.org.

  4. 04

    Update your policy

Add the model sentence telling customers where the online withdrawal function is.

Questions people ask

When did the EU withdrawal button become mandatory?

EU countries had to apply the new rules from 19 June 2026, under Directive (EU) 2023/2673.

Do I need it if I'm not based in the EU?

It applies to online contracts with consumers in the EU, so non-EU stores selling to EU shoppers should check with a lawyer.

Can the button say “Cancel order” instead?

The directive allows an unambiguous corresponding formulation, but the official wording is the safe choice. The checker warns when your label differs.

What happens if I don't add it?

Shopify's help notes the 14-day withdrawal period might be extended to 12 months and 14 days, and national regulators can take action.

Does the customer have to give a reason?

No. The form collects the name, order details and email for the confirmation. Don't make a reason required.
