New vs. legacy, and how this tool tells them apart

New customer accounts are passwordless: shoppers sign in with a one-time code emailed to them, hosted on Shopify's own authentication flow (sometimes on a custom account.yourstore.com domain). Legacy accounts render a theme-based sign-in form with a password field, at /account/login.

This checker requests /account and /account/login and looks at which pattern comes back. It's a best-effort read from the outside; Settings > Customer accounts in your own admin states the type directly and is the authoritative source.

Before you upgrade

  • Review legacy templates and any custom /account code in your theme first, so you know what you'd lose.
  • Workflow automations (Shopify Flow, apps) triggered on legacy customer account events aren't supported after upgrading.
  • The customer_account_status segment filter stops working; rebuild any segment that uses it.
  • Multipass isn't supported after upgrading, except for existing Shopify Plus merchants already using it.
  • Per-market custom domains for account pages aren't supported.
  • Classic /account URLs redirect automatically, but custom modals or separate account pages you built yourself need manual removal.
  • Check whether apps that touch customer accounts (loyalty, subscriptions, wishlists) have a version compatible with new accounts.

Start the upgrade from Settings > Customer accounts > Upgrade, which walks through duplicating your checkout configuration to test safely before publishing.

Questions people ask

Will my customers lose their accounts or order history?

No, upgrading changes the sign-in experience, not the underlying customer or order data.

Do I have to upgrade?

Not immediately for most stores, but Shopify is investing new features into the new accounts system, and legacy accounts may eventually be phased out. Plan for it rather than being forced into it.

Why did the checker say it's unclear?

Some themes or custom setups don't match either pattern cleanly from the outside. Check Settings > Customer accounts in your own admin, which always shows the actual type.

Does new customer accounts support Multipass?

Only for Shopify Plus merchants who were already using Multipass before upgrading; new setups aren't supported.
