The script tag deprecation timeline

DateWhat happens
1 October 2026Apps can no longer create or update script tags. Existing ones keep running.
1 March 2027Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefronts. Anything still using them stops loading.

Script tags let apps add JavaScript to every storefront page without touching your theme. Their replacements are app embed blocks in a theme app extension (which you can see and switch off in the theme editor) and web pixels for tracking. Script tags on the order status page are covered by an earlier, separate deprecation.

How the checker finds script tags

Shopify writes the list of script-tag URLs into a small loader (a function called asyncLoad) in every storefront page. The checker reads that list, unwraps Shopify's CDN proxy URLs to the real domain and matches each domain to a known app.

  • Script tags will stop on 1 March 2027. Each shows what stops working for that kind of app.
  • Loaded twice: the app runs as a script tag and an app embed, or adds the same script twice.
  • App embeds load from cdn.shopify.com/extensions/ and aren't affected.
  • Other app scripts come from theme code or app embeds. They're not affected, but they may be leftovers from apps you removed.

What to do about each script tag

  1. 01

    Identify the app

Unknown domains belong to an installed app. Match them under Apps in your Shopify admin.

  2. 02

    Ask the developer

Send the email from the checker. Ask when they'll move to an app embed and whether you need to turn anything on.

  3. 03

    Turn on the app embed

In Online Store → Themes, click Edit theme, then the App embeds icon in the sidebar. Switch on the new embed and save.

  4. 04

    Replace or remove

If an app won't migrate, find an alternative before March 2027. Uninstall apps you no longer use.

  5. 05

    Check again

Run the checker after each change. The goal is zero script tags and no app loading twice.

Questions people ask

Do I need to do anything if my apps are up to date?

Possibly. Many apps need you to switch on their app embed in the theme editor after they migrate. Until then the old script tag may still be doing the work.

Will my tracking pixels stop?

Only if they load through a script tag. Tracking apps are expected to move to web pixels, which need no action from you.

What if the checker doesn't recognize a domain?

It still counts as a script tag. Look through your installed apps, or ask Shopify Support which app created it.

Does this affect headless stores?

Script tags are injected into Online Store themes. A headless storefront that doesn't use the online store theme doesn't load them.

Why is an app listed as loaded twice?

It loads both as a script tag and as an app embed, which can double-count analytics or show a widget twice. Ask the developer to remove the script tag.
