How eBay's final value fee is worked out
eBay charges a final value fee on the total amount a buyer pays: item price, shipping and sales tax together. The rate depends on your category and whether you have an eBay Store. A small per-order fee (30 cents on orders of $10 or less, 40 cents above that) is added on top.
Example (the calculator's starting numbers)
- Item + shipping
- $50.00 + $8.00 = $58.00
- With 7% sales tax
- $62.06
- Final value fee (13.6%)
- $8.44
- Per-order fee (over $10)
- $0.40
eBay takes $8.84, so you keep $49.16 of the $58.00 you charged. After a $20 item cost and a $7 label, profit is $22.16.
Stores, ads and international fees
| Extra | What it adds |
|---|---|
| eBay Store (Basic or higher) | Lowers the final value fee rate in most categories, and gives free listings. |
| Promoted Listings (general strategy) | Your chosen ad rate, charged on the same total as the final value fee, only when the item sells after a click. |
| Shipped abroad, no eBay International Shipping | Adds a 1.65% international fee on the total. |
Sellers rated below standard on eBay's seller level pay an extra 6% on final value fees. Keep your defect and late-shipment rates low to avoid it. Trading cards, coins, sneakers, watches and a few other categories have their own rate tables. Pick your category above to see it.
Pitfalls
- Sales tax counts. eBay's fee is on the total the buyer pays, tax included, even though the tax itself passes straight to the state.
- Free shipping still gets charged. If you offer free shipping, the fee is smaller only because the total is smaller, not because eBay skips it.
- A Store isn't automatically cheaper. Below a certain order volume, the monthly fee costs more than the lower rate saves. Check with the eBay Store Subscription Calculator.

Questions people ask
How much does eBay charge to sell an item?
In most categories, 13.6% of the item price, shipping and sales tax (12.7% with a Basic Store or higher), plus a 30 or 40 cent per-order fee. Rates are lower for electronics and higher for jewelry and handbags.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The final value fee is on the total the buyer pays, including the shipping you charge them and any sales tax eBay collects.
Is an eBay Store worth it?
It depends on your order volume and category. A Store lowers the final value fee and includes free listings, but the monthly fee only pays for itself past a certain number of sales. The eBay Store Subscription Calculator finds that point for you.
How much extra do Promoted Listings cost?
Your chosen ad rate (2% to 100%) times the total sale amount, charged only if the item sells within 30 days of a click on the ad. It's on top of the final value fee.
Why is my payout lower than price minus the fee percentage?
The per-order fee and any Promoted Listings or international fee come off too, and eBay's percentage applies to shipping and tax, not just the item price.
