Private sellers pay nothing, business sellers pay a rate card
Since October 2024, UK-based private sellers pay no final value fee, per-order fee or regulatory operating fee on eBay.co.uk (cars, motorcycles and vehicles are excluded). Buyers pay a separate Buyer Protection fee that doesn't come out of your money. Business sellers pay a category rate on the total sale, a 30p or 40p per-order fee, and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, all before eBay adds 20% VAT.
Example (the calculator's starting numbers, business seller)
- Item + postage
- £25.00 + £3.50 = £28.50
- Final value fee (11.9%, Clothes)
- £3.39
- Per-order + regulatory fee
- £0.40 + £0.10
- VAT on the fees (20%)
- £0.78
eBay takes £4.67, so you keep £23.83. The same £28.50 sale from a private seller costs nothing in eBay fees, only the buyer's £1.70 Buyer Protection fee.
Category rates used (business sellers, no Shop)

| Clothes, Shoes & Accessories | 11.9% |
| Trainers | 11.9% under £100, 7% from £100 |
| Collectables, Toys, Baby, Health & Beauty, Garden, Sporting Goods | 10.9% |
| Books, Films & TV, Music, general Video Games, Phones, Sound & Vision | 9.9% |
| Mobile phones, tablets, TVs, headphones, home audio, select cameras | 6.9% to £1,000, then 3% |
| Jewellery & Watches (general) | 14.9% to £1,000, then 4% |
| Women's Bags & Handbags | 12.9% to £800, then 7% |
A few subcategories (tyres, GPS and power tools among them) share rate bands with nearby categories rather than getting their own line, so treat the category picker as a close match, not an exact lookup for every niche listing. An eBay Shop lowers rates further in many categories.
Private sellers and international sales
- Trainers exception. The 8% Trainers rule some guides mention applies only to private sellers registered outside the UK. This calculator doesn't model that case, so UK private sellers pay nothing on trainers too.
- Selling abroad. UK sellers (private or business) pay an extra 3% (private) or their category's international rate (business) when the delivery address is outside the UK.
- VAT. Only business sellers pay VAT on eBay's fees, and VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim it. Turn the toggle off to see fees before VAT.

Questions people ask
Do UK private sellers pay eBay fees?
No. Since October 2024, private sellers based in the UK pay no final value fee, per-order fee or regulatory operating fee (cars and vehicles excluded). The buyer pays a separate Buyer Protection fee instead.
How much does eBay UK charge business sellers?
A category rate (9.9% to 14.9% in most categories, lower for electronics) on the item, postage and any tax, plus a 30p or 40p per-order fee and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, all with 20% VAT added.
What is eBay's Buyer Protection fee?
A fee the buyer pays on top of your price, roughly 7% up to £20, 4% from £20 to £300 and 2% above that, plus 10p. It doesn't come out of your payout.
Does eBay UK charge more for international sales?
Yes. Business sellers pay their category's international rate (1.05% to 2%) and private sellers pay 3%, both on the total sale, when the delivery address is outside the UK.
Is it worth getting an eBay Shop in the UK?
If you're a business seller selling regularly, a Shop usually lowers your final value fee rate. Compare the saving against the Shop's monthly cost for your category and volume.
