Why a brief gets you better quotes

Developers price uncertainty. A vague request ("I need an online store") gets quotes that swing wildly, or a long discovery call before anyone can give you a number. A one-page brief that covers the catalog, features, integrations and deadline gets you quotes you can actually compare.

The generator turns your answers into that brief. Anything you haven't decided is marked To confirm, so nothing is guessed and the developer knows exactly what to ask.

What goes into the brief

SectionWhat it covers
Project summaryWhat you sell, what the project is, the main goal and timing
GoalsWhat success looks like, in your own numbers if you have them
PlatformShopify or WooCommerce, or how each fits if you haven't chosen
FeaturesMust-haves for launch, and nice-to-haves for later
CatalogNumber of products and variants, and where product data comes from
IntegrationsEmail, accounting, shipping, ERP and marketplace connections
Payments, shipping and taxMarkets, currencies and what's already set up
Migration and SEORedirects, customers and order history, for redesigns and migrations
Budget and timelineYour range, launch timing and suggested phases
Open questionsWhat the developer needs to answer before a firm quote

Getting a useful brief

  • Say what isn't working today. "Checkout is slow on mobile" is more useful than "we want a modern site".
  • Give numbers: products, variants, monthly orders, markets.
  • Name your tools. Your email platform, accounting, shipping and reviews apps all shape the build.
  • Share a budget range. It lets a developer suggest what fits, instead of quoting the whole wish list.
  • Split must-haves from nice-to-haves. A second phase is where most wish-list items belong.

When the brief reads right, copy it and send the same version to every developer you're talking to. If you'd like me to quote on it, use Hire me at the top of the page.

Questions people ask

What should an ecommerce website brief include?

What you sell and to whom, the goal, the platform, must-have features, catalog size, integrations, payments and shipping, budget and deadline. The generator covers each one and marks the gaps.

Do I need to choose Shopify or WooCommerce first?

No. Choose Not sure yet and the brief sets out how each would fit your needs, leaving the final decision to you and your developer.

Should I include my budget?

Yes, even as a range. Without one, developers either guess or quote the full wish list, and neither helps you compare.

Can I edit the brief?

Yes. Copy it into a doc or email and change anything. The items marked To confirm are the ones to decide before you send it.

Who should I send it to?

Every Shopify or WooCommerce developer or agency you're considering, so their quotes are comparable. You can also send it to me through Hire me.
