Cheapest plan at your sales

Grow

Grow costs $1,009/mo all-in, $10 a month less than Basic: its lower card rate outweighs the higher subscription.

Grow beats Basic above
$25,000/mo
Advanced beats Grow above
$110,000/mo

Fees aren't the only reason to change plan: Grow adds up to 5 staff accounts and Advanced up to 15, plus other features. Premium and international cards cost more than the standard rate used here. If you're weighing a plan change alongside a redesign or a migration, the Hire me button reaches me for an exact quote.

The break-even between Shopify plans

Each step up in Shopify's plans costs more per month but charges a lower percentage on every sale. Past a certain level of sales, the percentage you save is worth more than the extra subscription. The fixed 30¢ per order is the same on every plan, so it drops out of the comparison.

Break-even monthly sales = difference in plan price ÷ difference in percentage rate
With Shopify Payments, the rate is the online card rate. With another gateway, it's Shopify's third-party transaction fee, because your gateway charges the same on every plan.
Plan (US)Billed yearlyBilled monthlyShopify Payments online card rateFee with another gateway
Basic$29/mo$39/mo2.9% + 30¢2%
Grow$79/mo$105/mo2.7% + 30¢1%
Advanced$299/mo$399/mo2.5% + 30¢0.6%
Plus1- or 3-year termFrom $2,300/mo2.25% + 30¢0.2%

Example: US prices, billed yearly, Shopify Payments

Grow vs Basic
($79 − $29) ÷ (2.9% − 2.7%) = $25,000 a month
Advanced vs Grow
($299 − $79) ÷ (2.7% − 2.5%) = $110,000 a month
At $30,000 a month, $75 AOV (400 orders)
Basic $1,019, Grow $1,009, Advanced $1,169

At the starting values, Grow is cheapest by $10 a month. With another gateway the break-evens drop to $5,000 and $55,000 a month, because the fee gaps (2%, 1%, 0.6%) are wider.

Changing your Shopify plan

  1. 01

    Check a normal month

Use a typical month's online sales, not your best one. Shopify's Analytics → Reports shows sales over time.

  2. 02

    Change the plan

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Plan and pick the new plan and billing cycle.

  3. 03

Switch to Shopify Payments if you can

Under Settings → Payments. Removing the third-party fee often saves more than any plan change.

Things the fee maths doesn't cover

  • Features. Grow includes up to 5 staff accounts and Advanced up to 15. Basic has none beyond the owner. That alone can decide it.
  • Card mix. Premium and international cards cost more on every plan (in the US, 3.5% + 30¢ premium on Basic, and 1% extra for international cards), but the gaps between plans stay similar.
  • Plus. Shopify publishes Plus as starting at $2,300 a month; real quotes depend on the term and on sales. Card rates for Plus aren't published for every country, so the calculator shows "Ask Shopify" where they're missing.
  • Your country. Prices and card rates differ. The calculator uses Shopify's US, UK, Irish, Canadian or Australian prices depending on the currency you pick, or you can enter your own.

Questions people ask

When should I upgrade from Basic to Grow?

On fees alone, at about $25,000 a month in online sales with Shopify Payments (US prices, billed yearly), or about $5,000 a month if you use another gateway. Upgrade sooner if you need staff accounts.

When is Advanced worth it?

At about $110,000 a month in online sales with Shopify Payments, or about $55,000 with another gateway, on US prices billed yearly.

What's the third-party transaction fee?

A fee Shopify charges when customers pay through a gateway other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. It comes on top of your gateway's own fees.

Does billing yearly change the break-even?

Yes. Monthly billing raises every plan's price, and the gap between plans widens, so the break-even moves higher. Switch Billing to compare.

Is Grow the same as the old Shopify plan?

Grow sits between Basic and Advanced at the same US prices the middle plan has had ($79 billed yearly, $105 billed monthly), with lower card rates than Basic.
