How online stores are valued

Small ecommerce businesses are usually priced as a multiple of profit. Empire Flippers, a large marketplace for online businesses, uses the 12-month average net profit times a monthly multiple, which it says typically falls between 30 and 50.

Value = average monthly net profit (last 12 months) × monthly multiple
A monthly multiple of 36 is the same as 3× annual profit.

The calculator starts from a multiple you choose, then adds or takes away months for the things brokers say buyers look at: age, growth, reliance on one traffic source or on paid ads, one hero product, one supplier, and how many hours the owner works. These adjustments are rules of thumb, not market data.

The store is worth about $264,000, in a range of $240,000 to $288,000.

Raising what your store is worth

  • Clean books. Buyers pay for profit they can verify. Keep 12 months of profit and loss statements that match your Shopify payouts.
  • Diversify traffic. Build SEO and email so no single ad platform or marketplace drives most of your sales.
  • Step back. Document how the business runs and hand off daily tasks. Empire Flippers says owner involvement over 10 hours a week lowers the multiple.
  • Fix the store. A fast, well-built store with clean apps is easier to hand over. Run a product page check before you list.

Limits

  • Profit, not revenue. Revenue multiples are misleading for small stores. Use net profit after all costs, with only genuine one-off costs added back.
  • Brokers set the real multiple. Marketplaces decide it after vetting your books, traffic and trends.
  • Larger businesses differ. Bigger brands are often valued on EBITDA by investment bankers, with different multiples.
  • Short histories. With under 12 months of data, a buyer will use a shorter window and a lower multiple.

Questions people ask

How much is my Shopify store worth?

Most small stores sell for a multiple of monthly net profit. Empire Flippers says monthly multiples typically fall between 30 and 50, which is about 2.5× to 4.2× annual profit.

Do buyers value a store on revenue?

Rarely, for small stores. Buyers pay for profit, so a high-revenue store with thin margins can be worth less than a smaller, more profitable one.

What lowers an ecommerce valuation?

Declining profit, a short history, relying on one product, one supplier or paid ads alone, and an owner who works many hours a week.

What profit figure should I use?

The average monthly net profit over the last 12 months, after every cost. Add back your own pay and truly one-off costs, and be ready to show the evidence.
