The ecommerce revenue formula

Every online store's revenue comes down to three numbers: how many people visit, how many of them buy, and how much they spend. Change any one and revenue moves by the same proportion.

Revenue = sessions × conversion rate × average order value
Revenue per visitor (conversion rate × AOV) tells you what each visit is worth, which is handy for judging ad costs.

Example: the default numbers

Today
20,000 × 1.8% × $65 = $23,400 a month (360 orders)
Each lever +10%
$23,400 × 1.1 = $25,740
All three +10%
$23,400 × 1.1 × 1.1 × 1.1 = $31,145
Sessions for $50,000
$50,000 ÷ (1.8% × $65) = 42,736

Three 10% improvements add 33% to revenue, because they multiply. That's $92,945 a year more for this store.

Finding your numbers

  1. 01

    Sessions

In Shopify, Analytics → Reports has sessions over time. In GA4, look under Reports → Acquisition.

  2. 02

    Conversion rate

Shopify's Analytics dashboard shows online store conversion rate. Otherwise divide orders by sessions.

  3. 03

    Average order value

Also on Shopify's Analytics dashboard, or divide revenue by orders.

  4. 04

    Pick the cheapest lever

Traffic usually costs money every month. Conversion and AOV improvements keep paying once they're made.

Pitfalls

  • Changes are relative. A 10% conversion lift takes 1.8% to 1.98%, not to 11.8%.
  • The levers interact. More traffic from cold ads often converts worse, and a discount raises conversion but can lower AOV.
  • Use a normal month. Sales and holidays distort all three numbers.
  • Revenue isn't profit. Check margins with the contribution margin calculator.

Questions people ask

How do you calculate ecommerce revenue?

Multiply sessions by conversion rate by average order value. 20,000 sessions at a 1.8% conversion rate and a $65 AOV is $23,400 a month.

How much traffic do I need to make $10,000 a month?

Divide $10,000 by your revenue per visitor (conversion rate × AOV). At 1.8% and $65, that's about 8,550 sessions a month.

What's revenue per visitor?

Conversion rate times AOV: the average amount each visit is worth. It's the most you can spend per visitor before you lose money on revenue alone.

Which lever should I improve first?

Usually conversion rate or AOV, because those gains apply to all future traffic without an ongoing cost. Buying more traffic costs money every month.
