How the calculator works
List each app, what it does and what it costs a month. The calculator totals the stack and marks apps whose job a theme can usually do: announcement bars, countdown timers, size charts, badges, FAQ tabs and similar.
Example: the default stack
- 8 apps
- $15 + $45 + $7 + $10 + $9 + $8 + $39 + $20 = $153 a month ($1,836 a year)
- Replaceable
- Announcement bar, free shipping bar, countdown, size chart, page builder: $73 a month
- Rebuild
- 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 16 = 27 hours × $75 = $2,025
Replacing them pays back in 27.7 months and saves $603 over 3 years, plus five fewer app scripts on your pages. The page builder carries most of the hours: the four small apps alone cost $34 a month and take about 11 hours ($825) to replace.
Auditing your app stack
- 01
Find what you pay
In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Billing and click View current charges. App subscriptions bill on their own 30-day cycle alongside your plan.
- 02
List what each app does
Open Apps and note what each one is for. Remove any you no longer use.
- 03
Replace the simple ones
Generate the code for an announcement bar, a free shipping bar or a countdown timer, and add it as a theme section.
- 04
Uninstall cleanly
Some apps leave code in your theme after you uninstall them. Check with the script tag checker.
Things to watch
- Usage-based charges. Some apps charge by orders or messages, so the monthly figure moves with sales. Enter a typical month.
- Pending charges. Uninstalling stops future billing cycles, but a charge already generated can still appear on your next bill.
- Keep apps that store data. Reviews, email, subscriptions and loyalty need a backend, so theme code can't replace them.
- Theme updates. Custom code in a theme has to be carried over when you change or update the theme. Keep it in its own sections and snippets.
Questions people ask
How much do Shopify apps cost?
App developers set their own prices, from free plans to hundreds of dollars a month. They bill through Shopify as recurring, usage-based or one-time charges.
Where do I see what I'm paying for apps?
In your Shopify admin under Settings → Billing. Click View current charges for pending fees, or look under past bills.
Do apps slow down my Shopify store?
Many apps load their own scripts and styles on every page, which adds weight. Removing apps you don't need is one of the cheapest speed fixes.
Which Shopify apps can I replace with code?
Display features that don't need stored data: announcement bars, countdown timers, trust badges, size charts, FAQ tabs, sticky add to cart buttons and custom fonts.
Does uninstalling an app stop the charges?
It stops future billing cycles. A charge that was already generated before you uninstalled can still appear on your next bill.
