Shipped vs local: two different cost shapes

A shipped Facebook Marketplace sale pays a selling fee (or a minimum flat fee on small orders) and a shipping label. A local pickup sale pays no Facebook fee at all, but costs you the driving to meet the buyer or hand off the item. The calculator runs both for the same item.

Shipped profit = price + shipping − max(rate × base, minimum fee) − label − item cost
Local profit = price − (miles × cost per mile) − item cost

Example (the calculator's starting numbers)

Shipped: buyer pays
$60 + $8 = $68.00
Selling fee (10%) + label + item cost
$6.80 + $9.00 + $20.00
Local: buyer pays you directly
$60.00
Driving (6 miles × $0.76) + item cost
$4.56 + $20.00

Shipping nets $32.20. Local pickup nets $35.44, $3.24 more here, but only reaches buyers near you.

What's confirmed and what to check yourself

Facebook's own Marketplace shipped-order fee page couldn't be confirmed for this update, so the 10% rate and the $0.80 minimum fee in this calculator are editable defaults, not a verified fact. Before you rely on the numbers, open a listing with shipping turned on and check the fee Facebook itself shows you in the payout summary, then update the fields here to match.

  • Whether the fee includes shipping. Facebook's payout summary shows whether the selling fee applies to the item price alone or to item plus shipping. Set Fee charged on to match what you see.
  • Mileage cost. The default uses the IRS standard business mileage rate as a rough per-mile cost. Use your own running cost per mile if you track it, or check the current IRS rate.
  • Meet safely. For local pickup, meet in a public place, ideally one your local police department designates for online sale exchanges.

Questions people ask

Does Facebook Marketplace charge a selling fee?

Only on shipped orders, where it deducts a percentage of the sale (shown on your listing when you turn on shipping) or a small flat minimum fee on cheap items, whichever is higher. Local, in-person sales have no Facebook fee.

How much does Facebook Marketplace take per sale?

Check the fee shown in your own listing and payout summary. This calculator's default rate is an editable estimate, not a confirmed number, since Facebook's fee page couldn't be verified for this update.

Is local pickup cheaper than shipping on Facebook Marketplace?

Usually, once you account for the selling fee and label on a shipped sale, unless you have to drive a long way for the pickup. This calculator compares both for your actual numbers.

Should I include my driving cost when pricing a local sale?

Yes, if the buyer isn't coming to you. Use the IRS standard mileage rate as a starting point, or your own actual cost per mile if you track fuel and wear separately.
