When the buyer pays shipping, Mercari takes 10% of the shipping too. Free shipping avoids that, but you pay the whole label, so it only helps if it wins you the sale.

10% of item and shipping, deducted before payout

Mercari's US seller fee is a flat 10%, charged on the item price and, if the buyer pays for shipping, on that shipping amount too. With free shipping, the fee is only on the item price, but you pay the whole label out of your earnings either way.

Selling fee = 10% × (item price + shipping the buyer pays)

Example (the calculator's starting numbers, buyer pays shipping)

Item + shipping
$40.00 + $7.00 = $47.00
Selling fee (10%)
$4.70
Shipping label
$7.00

You earn $35.30, and after a $12 item cost, profit is $23.30. With free shipping instead, you'd earn $29.00, since the fee only applies to a $40 item price.

Instant Pay, Promote and the buyer's fee

  • Instant Pay costs $3 per cash-out; standard direct deposit is free but takes longer. Only turn it on if the speed is worth $3 to you.
  • Promote has no separate fee: you drop the price by at least 5% and Mercari boosts the listing. That price cut is your real cost, shown in the calculator's caption.
  • Buyer Protection fee (3.6%) is paid by the buyer on top of your price, not deducted from your payout. It's shown here so you can see the buyer's true total, which matters when you're pricing against other marketplaces.

Questions people ask

How much does Mercari take from a sale?

10% of the item price, and 10% of the shipping too if the buyer pays for it. With free shipping, only the item price is charged.

Does Mercari charge a fee on shipping?

Only the shipping the buyer pays you for, not the cost of the label itself. If you offer free shipping, the fee only applies to the item price, but you pay the whole label yourself.

What is Mercari's Buyer Protection fee?

A 3.6% fee the buyer pays on top of your price and shipping. It doesn't come out of your earnings; it's part of what the buyer pays for the purchase.

Is Mercari's Instant Pay worth the $3 fee?

If you need the money immediately, yes. Otherwise, standard direct deposit is free and usually arrives within a few business days.

Does Promote cost extra on Mercari?

No separate fee, but you have to drop your price by at least 5% for the listing to qualify, which is a real cost even though it's not labeled as a fee.
