Google Ads Headline Generator
Write 15 headlines and 4 descriptions sized to Google's limits for a responsive search ad, plus a display path.
How a responsive search ad is built
A responsive search ad (RSA) takes up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions and lets Google combine them into different ad versions, testing which combination performs best for each search. Because any headline can appear next to any other, each one has to make sense on its own.
| Field | How many | Character limit |
|---|---|---|
| Headlines | 3 to 15 | 30 characters each |
| Descriptions | 2 to 4 | 90 characters each |
| Display path | 0 to 2 | 15 characters each |
The generator always writes the full 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, each well under its limit, so you can trim any that don't fit your ad group instead of writing more from scratch.
Using them in Google Ads
- 01
Open the ad group
In Google Ads, go to your campaign and ad group, then open or create a responsive search ad.
- 02
Add the assets
Paste the headlines into the Headlines fields and the descriptions into the Descriptions fields, in any order. Add the display path words if you use them.
- 03
Check the ad strength score
Google Ads scores the ad as you build it. Adding more distinct headlines (not near-duplicates) usually raises the score.
- 04
Pin only when needed
Pinning a headline or description to a fixed position stops Google testing combinations for that slot, so pin sparingly, for example a legal disclaimer that must always show.
Pitfalls
- No ALL CAPS or gimmick punctuation. Google's editorial policies disallow capitalization or punctuation and symbols that aren't used for their intended purpose.
- No unverifiable superlatives. Don't claim "best", "#1" or "cheapest" unless you can back it up.
- Don't repeat near-identical headlines. Google's own guidance is that each headline should say something different so the combinations actually vary.
- The display path is cosmetic. It doesn't have to match your real URL structure, but it should look like part of it.
Questions people ask
How many headlines does a responsive search ad need?
Google Ads accepts 3 to 15 headlines and 2 to 4 descriptions. The generator writes the full 15 and 4 so you can pick the strongest ones for your ad group.
Why does every headline need to work on its own?
Google mixes and matches your headlines and descriptions into different combinations automatically, so a headline that only makes sense next to a specific other one can end up paired with something else.
Can I use a discount in the headlines?
Pick Sale or discount and add your offer details. Without an amount, the generator writes a placeholder like [X]% Off instead of guessing a number.
What's the display path for?
The short, bold text shown after your domain in the ad, such as yourstore.com/Linen/Shirts. It's for readability, not a real folder on your site.
Can I use these for Performance Max too?
Performance Max uses similar text assets but with different limits and an asset group structure. Check Google's Performance Max help before reusing these headlines there.
