Shopify Customer CSV Formatter
Fix phone numbers, country codes and marketing consent before you import a customer list.
Used only for numbers with no country code already, like a plain US or Canadian number.
How it works
Shopify's customer CSV is picky about a few columns: phone numbers need a leading + and country code, Country/Province Code need two-letter ISO codes, and Accepts Email Marketing / Accepts SMS Marketing only accept yes or no, not true/false or 1/0.
- Phone numbers with no country code are assumed to be in the country you set below (default +1 for US/Canada) and reformatted to E.164.
- Country and province names (like "United States", "California") are converted to their 2-letter codes.
- Marketing consent values are normalized to yes/no.
- Duplicate emails are flagged so you can merge or remove them before importing.

- 01
Fix any errors listed
Rows with no email and no phone number can't be imported; Shopify needs at least one to identify the customer.
- 02
Go to Customers → Import
In your Shopify admin, upload the downloaded CSV.
- 03
Check the marketing consent columns
Only add customers who actually agreed to receive marketing; importing a list doesn't collect real consent.
Questions people ask
What country code does it assume?
Whatever you set in the option above, applied only to phone numbers that don't already start with a country code or +.
Does this check that an email is deliverable?
No, only that it's not a duplicate within the file. Use an email verification tool separately if you need deliverability checks.
Can I import marketing consent for people who never opted in?
You shouldn't. Shopify's own policies and most email/SMS laws require real consent before you mark someone as subscribed.
What if a country isn't recognized?
It's left as-is with a warning; set the two-letter code for that row by hand.
