Variants this product needs

288 variants

Size (8) × Color (12) × Material (3) = 288 combinations. That fits Shopify's 2,048-variant limit.

Within Shopify's limit, but past 250. Liquid's product.variants returns only the first 250 variants, so a theme that loops over every variant will miss some. A product also holds up to 250 media items, so not every variant can have its own image. Test the product page before you publish.

How Shopify counts variants

Every combination of option values is a variant. Multiply the number of values in each option, then take away any combinations you won't sell.

Variants = values in option 1 × values in option 2 × values in option 3 − combinations you won't sell

Example

Size
8 values
Color
12 values
Material
3 values

8 × 12 × 3 = 288 variants, 14.1% of Shopify's 2,048 limit. That fits, but it's past the 100 and 250 points below. With Color and Material unchanged, Size could go up to 56 values (2,048 ÷ 36).

LimitWhat it means
3 options per productHard limit. A fourth option can't be added to the same product.
2,048 variants per productHard limit for all merchants since October 15, 2025. The old limit was 100.
250 variantsLiquid's product.variants returns at most 250 variants, so a theme that loops over every variant misses the rest. A product also holds up to 250 media items, so past 250 not every variant can have its own image.
100 variantsSome third-party themes, apps and sales channels don't support more. Shopify names Stocky and the legacy Order Printer app, and apps not yet on the GraphQL product APIs may show a broken or limited experience.

What to do when you're over a limit

  • More than 3 options: merge two into one list (for example "Color / Pattern"), split the product into separate products, or collect the extra choice as a custom field (a line item property) on the product page.
  • More than 2,048 variants: split by one option, such as one product per material, and link the products with swatches or a collection. The calculator suggests the split with the fewest products.
  • Delete combinations you don't sell. Shopify doesn't need every combination to exist, and deleted ones stop counting.
  • Past 250: ask your theme developer whether the theme supports high-variant products. Shopify's guidance is to load option values as the shopper picks them, rather than looping over product.variants.
  • Past 100: check every app that touches products (inventory, reviews, feeds, printing) before you publish.

Questions people ask

What is Shopify's variant limit?

2,048 variants per product. Shopify raised it from 100 for all merchants on October 15, 2025.

How many options can a Shopify product have?

Three, such as size, color and material. The combinations of all three together must stay within 2,048 variants.

Do I need Shopify Plus for 2,048 variants?

No, the 2,048 limit applies to all merchants. Plus only matters for upload speed: stores with 500,000 or more variants can add up to 10,000 new variants a day by app or CSV, and that daily limit doesn't apply on Plus.

Why does my product page only show some variants?

Liquid's product.variants returns a maximum of 250 variants. Themes written before the higher limit often loop over that list, so variants past 250 don't appear. The theme needs updating for high-variant products.

Can each variant have its own image?

Each variant picks one image from the product's media, and a product can hold up to 250 media items. Past 250 variants, some variants have to share images.
