How it works
Etsy shows your listing photo at several shapes across the site: a wide crop on the listing page, a square in search and collections. This tool resizes to the shape you pick and shows a dashed outline of the centered square Etsy will crop for thumbnails, so nothing important gets cut off there.
Turn on Keep each file under 1 MB and the tool lowers the JPEG quality just enough to hit that target, because Etsy's help center warns that images over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slower connection.

Getting the thumbnail crop right
- Center the product. Etsy's square thumbnails, used in search and shop grids, are a centered crop of your photo, not the whole thing. Keep the product away from the left and right edges.
- Landscape 4:3 is Etsy's own listing shape. Choosing it, rather than a wide banner shape, means less is trimmed off for the square thumbnail.
- Transparent PNGs turn black on Etsy, so if your source has transparency, pick a background color here rather than leaving it as-is.

What size photos does Etsy want?
Etsy's help center recommends at least 2,000 px on both sides. Your first (main) photo should be at least 635 px wide and tall, or it can show up lower in search.
Why does Etsy care about file size?
Etsy's help center says photos over 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slow connection. Turn on the 1 MB cap here to avoid that.
Why is there a dashed square on my preview?
That's the centered square Etsy crops from your photo for search results and shop grids. Keep your product inside it so thumbnails don't cut it off.
Does Etsy accept transparent PNGs?
It accepts the file, but shows transparent areas as black rather than see-through. Set a background color here instead of relying on transparency.
