Product Alt Text Generator
Write alt text for a batch of product images from what you tell it each one shows, in one block per image or as a spreadsheet column for a CSV import.
It writes only from what you give it
The tool can't see your images. Paste one image per line: a URL, a short description, or both. It reads any description you give, pulls readable words out of the file name (skipping things like img_2043 or v2-final), and writes from that plus your product name. An image with nothing useful to go on gets a [describe image N] placeholder instead of a guess.
- Starts with the product, never "Image of" or "Photo of".
- Describes the one detail that makes that image different: the angle, the color, a close-up, the product in use.
- Length: Short (5 to 15 words, under 125 characters) for most images, Detailed (12 to 25 words, under 200 characters) for size charts or images that carry real information.
Up to 25 images per run. If you paste more, the extra ones are dropped and the tool tells you how many to run again.
Why alt text matters
Alt text is read aloud by screen readers, shown when an image fails to load, and used by search engines to understand what's in the image. The W3C's accessibility guidance for informative images is to describe what the image contributes to the page, not just what it visually shows, which is the approach this tool follows.
Adding it to your store
- 01
One image in Shopify
Go to Products, open the product, click the image, then Edit alt text, paste it in and click Save alt text.
- 02
Many images in Shopify
Use Spreadsheet column. Go to Products > Export, open the CSV, paste the alt text into the Image alt text column on the matching rows, then re-import with Overwrite products with matching handles ticked. Try it on one product first, since blank cells in columns you include get overwritten too.
- 03
WooCommerce
Go to Media > Library, open each image and paste the text into Alternative Text. It saves automatically.
Questions people ask
Do I have to give a URL for every image?
No. A short description works on its own; the URL is only used to pull extra hints from the file name. Either one, or both, is fine per line.
What happens if I don't describe an image at all?
If there's no description and no useful words in the file name, the tool writes a [describe image N] placeholder instead of guessing what the image shows.
How long can Shopify alt text be?
Shopify allows up to 512 characters, but suggests keeping it to 125 or fewer, which is why Short is the default length here.
One block per image, or spreadsheet column: which should I use?
One block per image if you're pasting each one by hand. Spreadsheet column if you're updating alt text through a Shopify product CSV.
I have more than 25 images.
Run the first 25, then paste the rest in a second run. The tool tells you exactly how many were left over.
