Shopify Image Compressor
Shrink product photos to a target file size in WebP, AVIF or JPEG, right in your browser, before you upload them.
Settings
Wider images are scaled down. 0 keeps the original size.
How the target file size works
Pick Hit a file size and a target in KB, and the tool searches for the highest quality setting that still lands under your target, rather than you guessing a quality percentage by trial and error. Switch to Set the quality if you'd rather fix the compression level directly.
Example: the default preset
- Format
- WebP
- Maximum width
- 2048 px
- Target
- 300 KB
A photo wider than 2048 px is scaled down first, then saved as WebP at the highest quality that still comes in at or under 300 KB.
Why file size matters on Shopify
Shopify serves your uploaded product image in several generated sizes and, per its own image documentation, converts JPEG and PNG to modern formats like WebP or AVIF automatically for browsers that support them. That means you don't need to convert the file yourself for Shopify's CDN, but a smaller original still means a smaller CDN copy at every size, which helps page speed and any Core Web Vitals score your theme is judged on.
This tool also strips EXIF and GPS metadata from every file it processes, which most cameras and phones embed by default and which Shopify doesn't need.
Format choices
- WebP is a safe default: broad support and a good size-to-quality ratio.
- AVIF compresses further but takes longer to encode, and this browser has to support creating it; the tool falls back to WebP automatically if it can't.
- PNG keeps transparency but doesn't compress photographic detail well. Use it only for graphics or logos, not photos.
- Shopify's own upload limit is 20 MB and 5000 × 5000 px / 25 megapixels, so this tool's output is always well inside that.
Questions people ask
What image format should I use on Shopify?
Upload JPEG or PNG. Shopify's CDN automatically serves WebP or AVIF to browsers that support them, so you don't have to convert manually, though a smaller original still speeds up every generated size.
What file size should a product image be?
There's no single Shopify rule beyond the 20 MB cap, but 300 KB or less per image is a reasonable target for page speed without a visible quality loss on most product photos.
Does compressing an image remove EXIF data?
Yes, this tool strips EXIF and GPS metadata from every file automatically, which shrinks the file a little and avoids uploading location data some cameras embed by default.
Why did my browser save an AVIF file as WebP instead?
Not every browser can create AVIF files from a canvas yet. When that happens, the tool falls back to WebP and tells you; on Shopify's storefront it makes no practical difference, since the CDN still serves AVIF to browsers that support it.
