What the checker looks at

  • Size: today's minimum is 100 × 100 px (250 × 250 px for apparel). Google Merchant Center Help says a stricter 500 × 500 px minimum starts being enforced on 31 January 2027, with warnings already appearing in Merchant Center since April 2026. The checker flags anything under 500 px even though it may still pass today.
  • Megapixels and file size: fails over 64 megapixels or 16 MB, Google's hard limits.
  • Format: JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF (non-animated), BMP and TIFF pass.
  • Product fill: warns outside the 75% to 90% range Google recommends.
  • Borders: flags a solid-color edge that differs from what's just inside it, since Google's policy disallows borders.

Google's policy also bans promotional text, watermarks, borders and placeholder or generic images used as the primary image.

Getting ahead of the January 2027 change

If your feed currently relies on small product photos (under 500 px), start replacing them now rather than waiting for the enforcement date. Google says it will begin optimizing some undersized images automatically, but that's a fallback, not a guarantee your listing keeps its current quality.

Questions people ask

What size does Google Shopping require right now?

100 x 100 pixels for most categories, 250 x 250 px for apparel, as of the 2026 policy. That's changing to 500 x 500 px for every category from 31 January 2027.

Why does the checker warn about images that currently pass?

Google Merchant Center Help says it started showing warnings for images under 500 x 500 px in April 2026, ahead of enforcing that minimum in January 2027. Fixing them now avoids a scramble later.

What's the maximum image size Google accepts?

64 megapixels and 16 MB. Anything larger is disapproved, so a huge unedited camera file can fail even though it looks fine.

Can I use a lifestyle photo as my main Google Shopping image?

Yes, Google doesn't require a white background the way Amazon and Walmart do. It does ban promotional text, watermarks, borders and placeholder or generic graphics on the main image.
