How the resize works

Drop in one photo or up to 30 at once. The tool reads each one's real pixel size, then either pads it onto a background (the whole photo stays visible) or crops it to fill the frame exactly, at the shape and size you set.

Turn on Trim empty background and center the product and it finds the product's edges and centers them, so photos shot from different distances end up looking consistent on your collection pages.

Example: a 4000 × 3000 px photo, square shape, 2048 px longest side

Output size
2048 × 2048 px
Fit
Pad (whole photo kept, background added)
Product fill
90% of the frame

The photo is padded onto a white square and the product is centered and scaled so its longest side fills 90% of 2048 px, about 1,843 px.

Shopify's help center notes that consistent aspect ratios across your featured images keep collection grids lined up, which is why this tool lets you pick one shape for a whole batch.

Uploading to Shopify

  • Product photos. Product page, Media, then drag files in or click Add. Shopify keeps your upload as-is and generates its own smaller copies for the storefront, so there's no need to also make a tiny thumbnail.
  • Reordering. Drag the main image to the front in the media grid; it's the one shown on collection pages and in search results.
  • Bulk uploads. For dozens of products, name each file with the product handle so Shopify's bulk editor or a CSV import can match photo to product.

Questions people ask

What's the best image size for Shopify products?

Shopify's help center suggests 2048 x 2048 px for square product images. You can go up to 5000 x 5000 px or 25 megapixels, but 2048 px is sharp enough for zoom on any screen without a huge file.

Should every product photo be the same shape?

Yes, for the main image. Mixed shapes make collection grids look uneven, with some photos cropped tighter than others. Use one shape for the whole batch.

Does Shopify accept PNG with transparency?

Yes, but most themes place products on a white or light background, so a transparent PNG can look odd next to photos with a plain backdrop. Pick a background color here to match your other photos.

Will resizing lose quality?

Shrinking a photo doesn't lose visible quality. Enlarging it does, since no tool can invent missing detail; the tool warns you when it has to enlarge your original.
