Pricing backward from your margin

Instead of guessing a price and checking the margin, this calculator works backward: enter your costs, including your own time, and the profit margin you want, and it solves for the price that hits it after Etsy's fees.

Worked example (the calculator's starting values)

Materials, time, overhead, packaging
$8.00, 1.5 h × $15/h = $22.50, $1.50, $1.00
Shipping label
$5.50
Target margin
20%, US seller, no Offsite Ads

Price to charge: $55.25 (rounds to $55.99). Covers $38.50 of cost and $5.70 of Etsy fees, leaving $11.05 profit, 20% of the price.

Break-even (0% margin) on the same item is $43.04: anything below that loses money once Etsy's fees are in.

Why your time belongs in the price

Setting Your hourly rate to $0 hides the real cost of making the item. Use what you'd pay someone else to do the same work. It's fine to price below that while you're starting out, but track it so you know the gap you're closing as you grow or hire help.

Offsite Ads and your price

If a share of your orders come from Etsy's Offsite Ads (check Shop Manager → Marketing → Offsite Ads), enter that share and rate: the calculator spreads the average Offsite Ads cost across every order, so the price still covers it even though only some orders actually pay the fee. With 20% of orders from Offsite Ads at 15%, the same item needs $57.71 instead of $55.25.

Questions people ask

How do I price a handmade item for Etsy?

Add up materials, your time at an hourly rate, overhead and packaging, then work out the price that covers Etsy's listing, transaction and processing fees and still leaves the profit margin you want. This calculator solves for that price directly.

Should I price my own time into an Etsy listing?

Yes. Even at a modest hourly rate, leaving your time out of the price means you're working for free once materials and fees are covered.

What if free shipping fits my niche better?

Set Shipping you charge the buyer to $0. The calculator then folds your label cost into the item price instead, so your margin works out the same either way.

Does this include Offsite Ads?

Yes, as an optional input. Enter the share of your orders that come from Offsite Ads and the rate (12% or 15%), and the calculator spreads the average cost across every order's price.

Why is the rounded price different from the exact price?

The calculator rounds up to a charm price ending in .99, which is at least as high as the exact price needed, so your margin is never worse than the target.
