How the referral fee is worked out

Amazon charges a referral fee on the total sales price: item price plus any shipping you charge and gift wrap. The rate depends on the category, and some categories charge different rates at different price points. Rates last checked 30 Sep 2026 against sell.amazon.com/pricing.

Worked example (the calculator's starting values)

Category and price
Home and Kitchen, $29.99 (flat 15%)
Referral fee
15% × $29.99 = $4.50

Referral fee $4.50. You keep $25.49 before fulfillment and product costs.

Most categories charge a flat rate. Some don't:

Category typeHow the rate appliesExample
FlatOne rate on the whole priceHome and Kitchen: 15% at any price
Whole-price tiersThe rate for your price band applies to the entire priceClothing at $19.99: 10% = $2.00. At $24.99: 17% = $4.25, because $24.99 is over the $20 band
Portion tiersEach rate applies only to the part of the price in its band, like tax bracketsJewelry at $400: 20% of $250 + 5% of $150 = $57.50

The per-item minimum

Most categories carry a $0.30 minimum referral fee per item. If the percentage works out below that, Amazon charges the minimum instead, which matters most on very low-priced items. The calculator flags it when it applies and shows how it changes the effective rate as price rises.

Using the fee

  • Confirm your category first. The fee category can differ from your browse node. Check it in the Fee Preview report in Seller Central before you rely on a rate here.
  • Feed it into a full profit picture. This is only the referral fee; add the FBA fulfillment fee and storage with the FBA calculator to see profit per unit.
  • Watch the band edges. For whole-price tier categories like Clothing, pricing just under a band (for example $19.99 instead of $20.01) can leave you with more money even though the price is lower.

Questions people ask

What is Amazon's referral fee?

A percentage of the total sales price (item price plus shipping and gift wrap you charge) that Amazon takes on every sale. Most categories are 15%, but rates range from about 5% to 45% depending on category and, in some categories, price.

Is there a minimum Amazon referral fee?

Yes, $0.30 per item in most categories. If the percentage comes out lower, Amazon charges the minimum instead.

Does the referral fee apply to shipping I charge?

Yes, for seller-fulfilled orders. Amazon's referral fee applies to the item price plus any shipping and gift wrap charge, not just the item price.

Why did my clothing item's fee jump so much for a small price increase?

Clothing uses whole-price tiers: the rate for your price band applies to the entire price, not just the part above the threshold. At $19.99 the rate is 10%; at $20.01 it's 17% on the whole price.

How is jewelry different from most categories?

Jewelry uses portion tiers: 20% on the first $250 and 5% on the amount above, like a tax bracket. A $400 ring pays $57.50, not $80 (20% of the whole price).
