The character rule comes from Etsy's own API, which rejects anything else. Punctuation like !, & or / in a tag gets the listing edit refused, so the checker flags it and strips it from the clean list.

Writing tags that get found

  • Use all 13. Every empty slot is a search you can't show up for.
  • Prefer phrases to single words. “Gold hoop earrings” matches that exact search and still covers “gold” and “earrings”.
  • Think like the buyer. Include the occasion (“bridesmaid gift”), the style (“minimalist”) and the recipient (“gift for her”), not just what the item is.
  • Don't repeat yourself. A repeated tag wastes a slot. Etsy's search also handles simple singular and plural forms, so you rarely need both.
  • Keep your title and tags aligned. Your main search phrase should appear in both so Etsy is confident what the item is.

Updating tags on Etsy

    Copy the clean list

    Use Copy on the “Tags ready to paste” box.

    Open the listing

    In Shop Manager go to Listings, open the listing and scroll to Tags.

    Paste and save

    Paste the list: Etsy splits it into separate tags at each comma. Remove any old tags you're replacing and publish.

Questions people ask

How many tags can an Etsy listing have?

13 tags per listing, and each tag can be up to 20 characters including spaces.

Why won't Etsy accept my tag?

Usually a character Etsy doesn't allow: tags can only contain letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and ™ © ®. The checker lists every tag with a bad character.

Should my tags repeat my title?

Your main phrase should appear in both. Beyond that, use tags for the other ways buyers describe the item: occasions, styles, materials and recipients.

Do I need both singular and plural tags?

Rarely. Spend the slot on a genuinely different phrase instead.
