The generator keeps names to 8 to 16 characters, so they're comfortably inside the limit, and shows a character count for each. Models can miscount, so count any name you like before you type it into Etsy.

What makes a good shop name

  • Easy to say and spell. Buyers who hear it should be able to find it.
  • Room to grow. "MugsByMaya" is stuck if you add bowls; "MayaClayStudio" isn't.
  • No awkward joins. Where two words meet with the same letter (ClayYarn), buyers misread it.
  • Your own. Avoid names close to other shops or brands, especially in the same category.

    Type the name into Etsy's shop name field. Etsy tells you if another member already uses it.

    Search beyond Etsy

    Search the name on Google and in the USPTO trademark search at tmsearch.uspto.gov, and check the matching Instagram handle and domain.

    Change it later if you need to

    You can change an existing shop name from your shop settings in Shop Manager. Etsy Help explains the current steps and limits.

How long can an Etsy shop name be?

Between 4 and 20 characters, with no spaces or special characters. Use capital letters to show where words start.

Can I use spaces or an ampersand in my Etsy shop name?

No. Etsy allows letters and numbers only. Write "FigAndWick" rather than "Fig & Wick".

Can I change my Etsy shop name later?

Are these names available?

The tool can't check. Etsy tells you when you type a name in, and you should search Google and the USPTO database too.
