How FBA profit per unit is worked out

The calculator sorts your package into Amazon's 2026 size tier, looks up the fulfillment fee for that tier and shipping weight, then subtracts it plus the referral fee, storage and your own costs from the price. Rates last checked 30 Sep 2026, against Amazon's US rate card in effect since 15 Jan 2026.

Profit per unit = price − referral fee − FBA fulfillment fee − storage − product cost − freight in − other costs

Worked example (the calculator's starting values)

Package
10 × 6 × 3 in, 1.2 lb, $24.99, Home and Kitchen
Size tier
Large standard, 1.29 lb shipping weight (dimensional weight beats unit weight)
Referral fee
15% × $24.99 = $3.75
FBA fulfillment fee
$5.42, or $5.61 with the 3.5% surcharge
Storage
0.104 cu ft × $0.78 × 2 months = $0.16
Product cost + freight in
$6.50 + $0.80 = $7.30

Profit $8.17 per unit, a 32.7% margin. ROI on product plus freight is 112%, and the break-even price is $15.38.

Getting the numbers right

  • Measure the shipped package, not the product. Amazon's fee uses the outer package on a scale and its longest, median and shortest sides, sorted for you.
  • Check the category Amazon actually uses. It can differ from where the item shows in search. Download the Fee Preview report in Seller Central and check the referral fee category and product-size-tier field for your SKU, or use the referral fee calculator to compare categories.
  • Watch the $10 and $50 price bands. The FBA fulfillment fee changes at those two points, so a small price change can jump you into a different band.
  • The 3.5% surcharge is a toggle. Amazon added it to fulfillment fees on 17 Apr 2026 and calls it temporary. Switch it off in the calculator if Amazon removes it.

What this doesn't include

  • Ad spend. Profit here is before advertising. Use the break-even ACoS calculator to see how much of that margin ads can spend before an order loses money.
  • Overmax and bulky packaging fees. Extra-large items over 96 in long, or over 130 in length plus girth, carry an extra Overmax handling fee this tool doesn't add. Bulky items that can't ship in their own packaging pay a separate packaging fee.
  • Aged inventory and returns. Check those with the storage fee calculator and the returns processing fee calculator.

Questions people ask

What fees does Amazon FBA charge?

A referral fee (a percentage of the price, by category), an FBA fulfillment fee (by size tier and weight), and a monthly storage fee. This calculator adds all three to your own product and freight costs.

How is the FBA fulfillment fee calculated?

Amazon sorts your packaged item into a size tier from its dimensions and weight, then charges a fee that depends on the tier, the shipping weight (the greater of unit and dimensional weight for most tiers) and the price band.

Why is my fee higher than I expected?

Check the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge Amazon has applied to fulfillment fees since 17 Apr 2026, and confirm your size tier in the Fee Preview report: dimensional weight often pushes light, bulky packages into a bigger tier than the product alone suggests.

What counts as a good ROI for an FBA product?

Many sellers look for 50% to 100% ROI on landed cost before ads, though it varies by category and how much you plan to spend on PPC. Use the profit and ROI figures here alongside the break-even ACoS calculator to see what's left after advertising.

Does this work for UK or EU FBA?

No, this uses the US rate card. Use the Amazon UK FBA calculator for the UK.
